St. Petersburg Dentist
At Rosemarie Marquez, DMD, we believe in equipping our patients with the information and tools they need in order to understand, achieve, and maintain dental health. While some dental conditions may be hereditary or medical, many serious dental conditions can be traced back to the lack of knowledge when it comes to proper hygiene and maintenance. In either case, it is important to turn to a St. Petersburg dentist who genuinely cares for your health and your ability to maintain it.
Many dental conditions are serious but can be treated or maintained with the help of the right dental team. Dental conditions can include:
- Dry Mouth
- Mouth Sores
- Oral Cancer
- Decay (Cavities)
- Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
- Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease)
Acids formed by plaque and sugars in the mouth can rob our tooth enamel of essential minerals, leading to tooth decay. Minerals like fluoride, calcium and phosphate help to “remineralize” the enamel layer from the foods and liquids we consume.
Fluoride helps make teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars. It can also reverse tooth decay in its early stages. In early childhood (below age six), fluoride becomes incorporated into the developing permanent teeth, strengthening them against the demineralizing effects of acids. Fluoride also aids in the remineralization of tooth enamel and the disruption of acid production in both children and adults.
Fluoride is found in many toothpastes and mouth rinses, but a stronger concentration is sometimes advisable. People with dry mouth, gum disease, frequent cavities, or even those with crowns or bridges, may benefit from the extra protective advantages of fluoride treatment.
Depending on your needs, we can apply gels, foams or varnishes in our office. In some cases, a prescription fluoride supplement in pill or liquid form may be more beneficial. For more information, please ask any of our caring and knowledgeable team members.
Even with good dental hygiene habits, there are hard to reach spots in your mouth where stubborn plaque build-up can lead to decay. Back teeth in particular, with their narrow, deep grooves in the chewing part of the tooth, can be difficult to keep clean. Your toothbrush and floss simply can't get into every nook and cranny, and plaque will take advantage of the situation. We can help you fight back with dental sealants. Basically, these are plastic that is bonded into the grooves of the chewing surfaces of your teeth to help shield them from plaque and the formation of tooth decay. Dental sealants are mostly recommended for children during the decay-prone years. They are an affordable, smart investment in your child's dental health. Where dental sealants are concerned, there is much truth to the old saying that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."We care about your dental health and future!
