For special occasions or if you simply want instant results, the quickest and most effective way to whiten your teeth is to have your dentist perform the procedure in a single appointment in her office. Once you and your dentist have decided to go with an in-office procedure, she will apply a special barrier gel to protect the soft tissues from the whitening gel, which is only meant for the enamel of the teeth. After 20 minutes, the gel is rinsed off and the shade is checked. The process can be repeated three times. After completed, your teeth will be significantly whiter. In total, the procedure lasts less than two hours. Dr. Marquez will provide take-home trays for at home touch-ups that will help keep your smile bright!
Take Home Whitening
Another popular option is to have Dr. Marquez, your St Petersburg dentist, provide you with a custom take-home whitening kit. To do this, your dentist will begin by taking a detailed impression of your teeth. From this, she will create a set of whitening trays that perfectly fit on your teeth and have a reservoir for the whitening gel. She will go over specific instructions for at home use. When you are at home, you will load the trays with whitening gel and place them in your mouth. How long you wear them depends on the strength of the whitening gel. Once you have achieved your brightest smile, in about two weeks, you can stop wearing the trays. You will be able to use them in the future for touch-ups to maintain that bright smile. Although this option will take longer, it requires a smaller investment in your smile than an in-office procedure.
Over The Counter Whitening Products
There is a variety of over the counter whitening products on the market. Although easy to purchase, they generally do not offer the same level of results as dentist-approved methods and are not as safe. This is because they do not have the same concentration of whitening agent and are not specifically designed for your teeth! The peroxide used is not as strong therefore the whitening effect is minimal, however, because the trays are not custom made the gel can get on the gums and burn the tissue. Additionally, whitening gel is only made for intact, healthy enamel! If there is decay (cavities) or exposed root surfaces, the gel can penetrate these areas causing detrimental effects. Dr. Marquez does NOT advocate the use of over the counter gels and strips. Some whitening toothpaste is acceptable but, most likely, will not produce noticeable results.
